Happy New Year and welcome to the “hunker down” garden workday!
We started outside, with a heavy focus on harvesting whatever we could and covering plants. The hard freeze this week could kill most of our gardens; cover with a frost cloth, a sheet, or even a thick pile of leaves to try to insulate your crops.
We collected quite a lot for Metrocrest! We had an abundance of fresh cilantro, mint, turnips, kale, broccoli, and cabbage! Our wagon overflowed!
We headed indoors for our potluck and Best Bets. Thank you to Ed, Lynn, and Peg for getting our feast set up. We had an excellent (and delicious) turnout!
We worked out plot negotiations and accepted payment for this year. Reminder: plots are $35 each. If we missed you this time, please plan to bring payment at the next workday to secure your plot(s).
It’s too cold to plant now, but if it warms up in a few weeks, you can plant potatoes, onion sets, radishes, turnips, spinach, carrots, and peas. If you go for English peas, remember that they can be tricky—they are delicious but very fussy about being watered often!
Otherwise, plan out your garden for the year! For example, if you want tomatoes in spring, filling your bed with potatoes now may be a problem—you need to save space! Think about how long each crop takes to mature and how much crop each requires.
See you at our next workday, February 10!
